It was Virginia Oldoini, Countess of Castiglione, a patroness of early photography and, notoriously, mistress of Emperor Napoleon III of France. I had written about her in a college paper, so I immediately wanted to use the postcard of her staring hypnotically through a frame. To incorporate plenty of vintage glam, I used Natalie Kalbach’s \u003ca href=\"\/collections\/stencils\"\u003eArt Deco Wallpaper Stencil\u003c\/a\u003e and a gold leafing technique.\u003c\/p\u003e \u003ch2\u003eVintage Gold Project Directions\u003c\/h2\u003e \u003cp\u003eMix \u003ca href=\"\/collections\/paints?limit=25\u0026amp;page=2\"\u003eblue and black paint\u003c\/a\u003e to create a blue\/grey color. Paint your canvas.\u003c\/p\u003e \u003cp\u003eDarken a portion of your mixed paint with more paint and lighten some with more blue, then use this to add visible paint streaks on your canvas. Continue blending or smudging the paint until satisfied with the result. Let canvas dry.\u003c\/p\u003e \u003cp\u003eApply \u003ca href=\"\/collections\/adhesives-primers-and-mediums\"\u003etexture paste\u003c\/a\u003e through Art Deco Wallpaper \u003ca href=\"\/collections\/stencils\"\u003estencil\u003c\/a\u003e to the top of your canvas using a \u003ca href=\"\/collections\/color-tools\"\u003epalette knife\u003c\/a\u003e.\u003c\/p\u003e \u003cp\u003eWhile texture paste is still wet, lay a sheet of gold leaf overtop and pat lightly in place with fingers. Note: too much pressure could tear the gold leaf or smoosh the stenciled image. Light pressure is enough to adhere the gold leaf.\u003c\/p\u003e \u003cp\u003eWhen texture paste has completely dried, use a paintbrush to remove the gold leaf from in between the stenciled image. These bits of gold are great for adding detail to other projects.\u003c\/p\u003e \u003cp\u003eCut out images from the \u003ca href=\"\/collections\/cards-and-envelopes\"\u003epostcards by Ingrid Pomeroy\u003c\/a\u003e. Glue the images to the bottom of the canvas with \u003ca href=\"\/collections\/adhesives-primers-and-mediums\"\u003egel medium\u003c\/a\u003e and brush gel medium over the entire canvas.\u003c\/p\u003e \u003cp\u003eRepeat the gold leafing process to add a few scallops to the bottom of the canvas over the postcard image. Brush some gel medium over the new scallops.\u003c\/p\u003e \u003cp\u003eTo blend the different elements of the canvas, brush some walnut stain over the entire canvas, allowing it to accumulate in the crevices of the stenciled design.\u003c\/p\u003e \u003cp\u003eIf the ink is too dark, blend with a wet paper towel or baby wipe.\u003c\/p\u003e \u003cp\u003eWith the \u003ca href=\"\/collections\/color-tools\"\u003egold gelatos stick\u003c\/a\u003e, scribble some color on top of the postcard image, then blend out with a makeup sponge to create a halo around the image.
