coloring-beyond-the-page
Coloring Beyond the Page Project

It seems like just about everyone has been bitten by the coloring bug. We’re all picking up coloring books, grabbing some pencils, and coloring away. It’s a great way to spend your time; it’s relaxing, fun, and portable.

The other day I was looking for something to color. I had left my coloring books at work, and I can’t draw a stick figure, so I assumed I was out of luck. As I looked through my supply stash, hoping to find something to do, my rubber stamps caught my eye. Truthfully, I haven’t picked up my stamps in ages. I go through phases with my crafts. Don’t we all? The few times I’ve used my stamps, they’ve mostly been textures and patterns.

Because I just felt like coloring, with no real project in mind, I pulled my current favorite set of stamps out. I also pulled out one of my favorite things to stamp on: shipping tags. I stamped a bird on a couple tags using StazOn ink. Using a permanent ink is essential to this. My favorite way to color in stamps is to use watercolor pencils, water-soluble crayons, or gelatos. Or all of the above. To ensure I didn’t use too much color I colored around the outline of the stamp.

I then took my Sakura Koi Water Brush and painted over the color, pulling it out to the center. I really liked the look, so I thought I’d pair a few of the birds together to make some wrapping paper. I randomly stamped the birds on a sheet of paper and colored them in using the same technique. Gelatos are water-soluble, so a water brush can be used to give them an extra smooth and creamy appearance, much like the finish of a watercolor.

While playing around with this, I realized how easy it would be to create my own gift wrap this year, complete with matching gift tag. It makes even more sense to do this since I know I’ll be giving out copies of The Coloring Studio to many of my family members. I also thought it might be fun to make a table runner for the holidays this year, leaving it uncolored and inviting family members to color in the designs while we sit around the table and talk. All you would need to do is stamp your chosen designs onto long piece of white paper. Place coloring tools around the table and you’re all set!

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0659/5546/3319/files/PROJ-1035__10679.1558404911.1280.1280.jpg?v=1746793456
