You can get creative and customize each candle using various fragrant essential oils and ingredients. I chose to create a simple beeswax candle with just a hint of peppermint oil. If you’re creating larger candles you may need to use a saucepan or larger candle making heating device.

Place all your materials on a safe surface. Try a non stick craft sheet, wax paper or an old wood chopping board. I added just a few drops to the beeswax (just using a few chunks of bees wax at a time.) Dip the base of one of the wicks with clips into the wax and then stick it to the center of the bottom of the jar. Place a little tin foil of the edge of the glass, to help prevent dribble down the side when you pour the wax in.

Pour the wax in gently. Since the candles I made are so small I didn’t have to worry about the wick moving around, but when making larger candles you may need to rest small sticks over the top of the candle container to help keep the wick in place while the wax dries.

While the wax is drying, cut out some of your favorite fabric to dress up the lids. This year may look different from past years, but that doesn’t mean we can’t keep the spirit of Thanksgiving alive. While working on the upcoming release of The Candle Issue, we discovered an easy way to make a large batch of candles in the oven. It made me realize how quickly I could make candles to give as a Thanksgiving gift, to let my loved ones know that although we may not be together this year, I am still thinking of them.

To Make the Candles

Preheat your oven to 200 degrees Fahrenheit. Fill each jar to the top with soy wax flakes, and place the jars on a baking sheet. Put the baking sheet in the oven. When the wax has mostly melted, fill the jars with more wax flakes. Stir with a wooden stick to mix everything together.

When everything has melted, it’s time to add the essential oils. Add 30 drops of sweet orange essential oil, followed by 15 drops of eucalyptus essential oil. Stir the wax with the oils with a stir stick. Insert wood wicks into their metal stands, and place them in the jars. Let the candle completely cure prior to lighting the wick.

To Dress Up the Candles

Once the candles were fully cured, I made little notes that I could tuck inside tiny vellum envelopes. Each one read, “Whenever you light this candle, know how grateful I am for you.” I then added a strip of washi tape and some dried baby’s breath to the front of the envelope. I wrapped the candle jar with some twine, and tucked the envelope inside. I hope each time the recipient lights that candle, she knows how thankful I am for her.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0659/5546/3319/files/PROJ-1307_how-to-make-candles-in-the-oven-11__06152.1638914450.1280.1280.jpg?v=1746794212
a-caffeinated-candle-collection-project-by-christen-hammons
A Caffeinated Candle Collection Project

One of my favorite feelings in the world is curling up on my sofa in the early morning and sipping a hot cup of coffee while I have several candles burning. The scent of coffee combined with the candles’ glow makes me feel cozier than anything else. I’ve been brainstorming ideas for our upcoming The Candle Issue, so I’ve had candles on my mind. It was during one of those early mornings spent on the sofa that I thought to combine coffee and candles. Rather than make a scented candle, however, I wondered if the warmth from a burning candle could release the scent of coffee beans. I was delighted to find that it could.

To do this, simply place a candle in a vintage tart tin.
