Once the paint has dried, place a strip of red and white fabric tape across the bottom of the house. To the top of the house, place red polka dots with red acrylic paint.\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003e With a large scallop punch create a background using polka dot paper. Using the smaller punch and the crepe paper punch a smaller shape. Glue the smaller scalloped circle to the larger. To the top of the crepe paper glue a polka dot heart. Cut a smaller heart out of red cardstock and glue this to the top of the larger heart. To the perimeter of the large scallop, glue silver glass glitter. Cut a small piece of crème burlap as well as a smaller piece of red felt, and glue the felt to the top of the burlap. From the red felt, cut a wee heart and glue to the top of the sheet music heart. Glue this to the front center of the house. To the bottom front of the house, glue a strip of sheet music, then glue the word “here” to the bottom left-hand corner. Immediately wipe the glaze from the surface with a paper towel, letting the brown settle into the crevices from your random mark making.\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003e Choose a complimentary paint color and brush onto a rubber stamp. Stamp images on the corners and the sides of the houses. Add enough images for visual interest, but leave adequate “white” space as well as breathing room. Let the paint dry and feel free to stamp another layer of images on top of the previous with another color to add depth.\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003e Choose your favorite quote or saying and write it onto the focal house shape. To emphasize the lettering, go over the letters with a white or silver pen. Add a few dots and doodles and slashes randomly throughout the houses. Personally, I’m not a big fan of my handwriting, but I’ve learned to embrace its imperfections. If you do not wish to write or doodle on your project, consider creating the quote on your computer and cutting and gluing it to your piece.\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003e Cut images to fit inside the house’s windows. Glue to the back of the chipboard squares that come with the kit. These windows are normally discarded, but I used them as a sturdy surface to back my images and then taped the squares into place by running a line of washi tape behind the images on the backside of the houses.\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003e Once you have your triptych finished with all its surface design elements, place them on a nonstick silicone craft mat. Mix up a full calibrated mixing cup of ICE Resin® (comes in the doming 4oz doming kit) according to manufacturer’s directions.\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003e Use a disposable paintbrush (an inexpensive 2-inch wide one found in the paint section of your local home improvement store is great) and paint a sealer coat of ICE Resin over all three houses. Using a craft stick, drip some additional resin into the windows to give them a three-dimensional effect. Let dry six to eight hours until the surface is smooth to the touch and feels like glass.\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003e To assemble your triptych, cut strips of heavy-duty packing tape to the back of each house shape, leaving a small gap between them where you will place the paintbrushes.\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003e Place the paintbrushes onto the tape. Add some glue to the back of a ticket and glue over one set of the paintbrushes for an additional layer. I went with the “miracle” theme, since I featured a piece of the Papaya Art calendar page that had the word miracle on it.\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003e Using the Papaya old calendar pages is a great way to repurpose the previous year’s calendar. Using a white crayon, I colored in various areas of the flowers. I then used the alcohol ink applicator with Distress Inks and lightly rubbed the inks over the flowers. This created a “crayon resist” so that where I colored in white stayed white and the rest of the area was colored with the Distress Inks.\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003e On the rest of the journal page I added various elements including patterned papers, washi tape, stamping and some extra crayon coloring in. On the blue patterned paper I used, I painted over it with a light coat of gesso and water, and on the polka dot paper I covered it with strips of white washi tape. There were a few additional stamped designs that I added and painted over with gesso also.\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003e I did some extra doodling around the stamped flowers with the crayons and wrote some quotes inspired by the blue patterned paper. I then pick two to three colors of the Dylusions Spray inks and spray them randomly onto the page. Then, I run a roll of paper towels over the paper once, picking up the excess water and ink. This also helps to blend it. These paper towels can be saved to use in later projects because they look so awesome covered in different colors of inks.\u003c\/li\u003e \u003cli\u003eOnce the page is dry, I either use stamps to add more interest to the page, or I use stencils and spray inks. All of the other designs from their collection were stamped right away, but there were just a couple I didn’t know quite what to do with. After talking with several employees here, I realized that both stamps had large areas of negative space. Our President, Kellene Giloff, urged me to find an interesting way to spotlight the negative space.\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003e I typically use stamps for texture, so the larger sections of solid color were throwing me off until I began playing around with the stamps. I started by inking \u003ca href=\"\/collections\/art-stamps-dina-wakley\" target=\"_blank\"\u003eReversed Grunge Growth\u003c\/a\u003e; then I pressed the honeycomb stamp from \u003ca href=\"\/collections\/art-stamps-christine-adolph\" target=\"_blank\"\u003eChristine Adolph’s Collage Cube\u003c\/a\u003e onto the solid section. To finish, I stamped Reversed Grunge Growth onto paper. The honeycomb texture added a nice effect, making it appear as if I added my own collaged layer. Next, I again inked Reversed Grunge Growth, but this time stamped a self-inking 7gypsies circle stamp randomly onto the solid space. When I stamped Reversed Grunge Growth, the circles appeared in the negative space, creating a nice, textured look. When I first began playing around with stencils, I limited myself to using them with spray ink. I never really went beyond that until recently. I prefer them because I do not use a lot of focal images in my work, as it tends to be more on the abstract side. We carry a lot of great ones in \u003ca href=\"\/collections\/stencils\"\u003eThe Shoppe at Somerset\u003c\/a\u003e, and I have also found some really interesting ones in the wall stencil aisle at my local craft store. I purchased round stencil sponges, and have really liked the effect I get from “pouncing” paint through the stencil. Because of the build-up of paint I get on the stencil, I also like to flip the stencil and “stamp” it onto whatever surface I’m working on. It’s an easy way to add another layer as well as use up all the paint. The stencil sponges are great because I’m able to use the paint left on them to stamp circles as desired.\u003c\/p\u003e \u003cp\u003eI also have been playing around with adding true texture with stencils. I am able to do that a couple different ways. One way is to emboss a stenciled design by applying a \u003ca href=\"\/collections\/inkpads-and-cleaners\"\u003eVersamark inkpad\u003c\/a\u003e as if it were a sponge through the stencil. I then remove the stencil, sprinkle on \u003ca href=\"\/collections\/index.php?route=product\/search\u0026amp;filter_name=embossing\"\u003eembossing powder\u003c\/a\u003e, and use a heat gun to finish it. I also like to use a palette knife and molding paste to add thick texture to my canvases. From Traci Bautista, I learned to create my own stencils using hot glue. I simply lay down some parchment paper (you can also use a non-stick craft sheet), and draw a design using hot glue. Once the hot glue has set, the design easily peels away and is ready to be used in your art. If you don’t have access to a laser printer, go to an office supply store and use a photocopy service to copy your pictures. Size your pictures accordingly, so they will fit each block.\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003e Give the gesso painted surfaces a very light sanding. A little “tooth” will help the images transfer better. Use a generous amount of gel medium onto the surfaces of the blocks and place the cut out images face down, and burnish lightly with a bone folder. Allow these to dry overnight.\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003e Doing one side carefully at a time, dab the surface with water and rub gently with your finger to remove the paper pulp. This can take a little getting used to, and knowing when “enough is enough” because sometimes the photos will dry and be left looking a little fuzzy which means you didn’t remove enough. However you need to be careful not to rub too hard as then you could remove too much and parts of the images will come off. Try some samples first on scrap wood.\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003e \u003cem\u003eAfter I removed the excess paper pulp, I gently scratched the edges with my fingernail to give them a distressed look.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003e Once the pictures have dried from being wet, paint the blocks with a sealer like \u003ca href=\"\/collections\/index.php?route=product\/search\u0026amp;search=pauge\" target=\"_blank\"\u003eCollage Pauge\u003c\/a\u003e. And allow that to dry also. When the paint has all dried, embellish the front of the book with strips of the graffiti washi tape. Also embellish the bind with the same washi.\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003e Paint some small swatches of white paint on the upper right corner of the book. So, when working on this group of projects with my Christmas tree in sight, I couldn’t help but go into holiday mode.\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003e The secret I found to working with metallic colors is to keep it simple. At first I tried to mix gold and silver with colors, and it just looked like a mess. It was too much. Then I tried pairing one of the metals with a neutral color like kraft, white, or black. It was an instant success.\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003e Most of the projects I made are fairly straightforward and don’t require many instructions. For the gold-tinted ornament, simply remove the top from a clear glass ornament, add a few drops of Alcohol Metallic Mixatives, and swirl around until you get full coverage. To allow the excess ink to drip out of the ornament, I placed it upside down in a glass that had some paper towels in it. Once dry, put the top back on the ornament and hang on the tree. I wanted to use the gorgeous burlap bags to hold a gift, but felt it was a little plain. I used acrylic black paint and foam stamps to stamp the world “Joy” on the bag. The other projects include a glass ornament that I filled with gold and silver leaf trim, a test tube note that was embellished with some twine and tape, and a little gift card holder.\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003e I’m so glad that I took the plunge and started playing around with gold and silver. Rub-ons are back and in a big way. \u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003e \u003cspan style=\"color: #cc8108;\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 16px;\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family: times new roman,times,serif;\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eOn a Journal\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e I knew I wanted to keep the designs simple, allowing the rub-ons to take center stage. I keep a supply of \u003ca href=\"\/collections\/?route=product\/search\u0026amp;filter_name=moleskine\"\u003eKraft-colored Moleskine journals\u003c\/a\u003e as well as a lot of blank wooden surfaces in my craft stash, so I grabbed them and some paint and got to work. For the journal, I just did a quick messy layer of \u003ca href=\"\/collections\/paints?limit=100\"\u003egray paint\u003c\/a\u003e. Once it was dry, I used a portion of a \u003ca href=\"\/collections\/stickers-and-labels\"\u003eflower rub-on\u003c\/a\u003e from the Secret Bird Society set directly on top of the paint. Sometimes stamps smudge when applied to paint with the wrong ink, so rub-ons are a great alternative.\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003e \u003cspan style=\"font-size: 16px;\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family: times new roman,times,serif;\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003e\u003cspan style=\"color: #cc8108;\"\u003eOn Vintage Signs\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e I had been wanting to use these small wooden signs I found at my local craft store, but wasn’t sure what to do with them. Once I saw the \u003ca href=\"\/collections\/stickers-and-labels\"\u003eIn the Attic collection of rub-ons\u003c\/a\u003e, I knew they’d go great on the signs. They rub on easily to flat, wooden surfaces.\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003e \u003cspan style=\"color: #cc8108;\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 16px;\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family: times new roman,times,serif;\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eOn a Bracelet\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e I loved the In the Attic collection so much that I wanted to make an accessory to wear. Keeping the wood its natural color, I applied the rub-ons around a blank bracelet. Because of the curved surface of the bracelet, I had to tape the rub-on down to keep it in place as I applied it. If you do this project, I advise using a flat bracelet, as the one I chose was a little tricky.\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003e I have to admit that I’m a little hooked on rub-ons now. They are great for one-time use, rather than investing in a pricey rubber stamp that you might not use as often as you thought you would. However, I like how my little mistake revealed the raw paper and decided to leave it as is.\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003e Using the \u003ca href=\"\/collections\/stickers-and-labels\"\u003eGrafix rub-onz\u003c\/a\u003e, I was able to create my own unique rub-ons with a personal photograph and some text I typed up in a Word document.\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003e It’s very important to read the directions carefully on the Grafix rub-onz packaging and do a few tests first if this is a new product for you. Just remember to mirror or “flip” your text so that it adheres correctly. You will find in the package there are two different types of sheets, so be sure you print on the correct sheet as the other is the rub-on adhesive. I added a few light pink scallops and personalized the journal with the letter A to give as a gift to a fellow employee.\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003e I also really like drawing on simple \u003ca href=\"\/collections\/bags-tags-and-sleeves?limit=22\u0026amp;page=2\"\u003ecotton fabric drawstring bags\u003c\/a\u003e. They make the perfect packaging for a gift, and the recipient can keep the bag to re-use for something else. There’s no need to get fancy: just a few circles or hearts customize the bag.\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003e Because of my love of doodling, I also like adding writing to my mixed-media pieces. However, I’m kind of a nightmare with very fine paintbrushes and lettering. I’ve tried to incorporate writing with other big-name paint pens before, only to find that they don’t work very well on top of layers of \u003ca href=\"\/collections\/paints\"\u003eacrylic paint\u003c\/a\u003e. On this piece, I first loosely brayered green paint onto my substrate. I then added a layer of blue with the brayer. Once dry, I sponged coral circles onto the left side, and then stamped stars randomly all over. To finish, I journaled a few thoughts in writing that only I can read. The paint easily went over the layers of paint I had already applied.\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003e The verdict? I might be a converted Montana marker user. I went over the ink with a roll of paper towels, absorbing any excess ink. I then used black acrylic paint to stamp various girls along the bottom of the page. While I like adding \u003ca href=\"\/collections\/washi-tapes\"\u003ewashi tape\u003c\/a\u003e to my journal pages, I don’t like using large chunks of it that appear to be floating on the page. To make them blend, I usually tear pieces of tape lengthwise. The torn edge helps the tape blend into the page. I used a brush pen to doodle on the page. To allow myself to be free with my doodling, I frequently use my non-dominant hand.
