Ruth Rae’s book Layered Tattered and Stitched is such an inspiration, and I love the look of primitive, artistic sewing. This time, I did a quick sketch and created my own mini dress and apron templates which you can download for FREE (scroll down to see the download).

Start by cutting out the templates, and trace them onto your fabric. Use muslin for the dress (two pieces - front and back) and blue ticking fabric for the aprons. On the dress, stamp the script design on the upper left sleeve using brown StazOn Ink and the script design from the Spring Jubilee stamp set.

Stitch around dress twice, using brown thread, but leave the bottom edge open so that you can fill it. Stuff the dress with polyfil or fabric scraps and then sew the bottom shut.

Using the piece of blue ticking fabric that was cut out for the apron, stitch around the outside of it twice with brown thread, and sew small strips of muslin onto either side to use as the ties.

For this project, I also included an alternative “ruffled” apron idea (which does not require a template). Just take a longer strip of the blue ticking fabric, and gather it slightly as you sew across the top edge. Sew a long, thin piece of muslin over the top edge, leaving enough on either side to use as the apron ties.

Add some simple, small buttons to the dress. Using small black hangers and mini clothespins hang the dress onto the hanger. Ruth’s work is always an inspiration to me; I have been wanting to try another mini dress project, so when I stumbled across these new mini hangers for the Shoppe, I jumped at the chance for an encore project.

Using fabric from old sheets, I cut out the dresses using the template from Ruth’s book. I stamped on the fabric in a random fashion using the script stamp image and grey StazOn Ink. With red thread in my sewing machine, I sewed the front and back of the dresses together, intentionally stitching the red thread on the outside instead of turning it inside out. This technique gives it more of a primitive appearance. I stitched around the dress twice, leaving the bottom of the dress open so that it can be stuffed prior to stitching the bottom closed.

To finish, simply add some simple embellishments to the dress if desired, I added a few mini pearl buttons. Its best to cut the fabric into different lengths so that you have a longer strip for the middle rose so that it’s the largest and then two smaller strips for the other two roses. If you were creating a necklace with 5 or 7 roses you would cut smaller strips for the roses accordingly.

Creating the roses
To create the rose take you long strip and fold it in half. Gradually wrap the fabric around the knot, twisting the fabric up as you go, this will create the look of the petals inside the rose and give it a nice “tattered” appearance because on edge is the folded side and the other is the cut side with the raw edge. Use one hand to hold the rose and keep it together and the other hand to wrap. Once the rose is complete, you will secure it at the back by stitching it a few times, stitch across the bottom of the rose, stitching through as many of the layers as possible to help secure it.

Glue the roses to the felt:
Once your roses are complete you will glue them onto a piece of felt, you can create a template for the number of roses you are using or just glue them straight onto the felt and then cut around them.
